The Dead and Dulce et Decorum Est Compare two First World War poems Essay Example
The Dead and Dulce et Decorum Est Compare two First World War sonnets Essay This article depends on two sonnets which were written in the First World War. One sonnet was composed by Rupert Brookes which is The Dead and the other was composed by Wilfred Owenss which is Dulce ET Decorum Est. This article will incorporate a clear examination between these two sonnets I will likewise be taking a gander at the language the two artists use and the impacts it has on the peruser. Rupert Brooke composed his sonnet toward the beginning of the war, it was composed as a bit of publicity, fundamentally attempting to urge youngsters to sign up and battle as he asserts it is respectable to pass on for your country.Whereas, Wilfred Owenss sonnet was composed towards the finish of the war. Owen had battled in the war himself, he was analyzed as experiencing shell-stun, he at that point showed up at craiglockland emergency clinic, it was here where he composed Dulce ET Decorum Est .Owen uncovers in his sonnet how it isn't noteworthy to chance your life and pass on for your na tion. The two artists conflict and give us two distinct perspectives toward war, and furthermore toward passing on for ones nation. The two writers utilize solid analogies and representations to demonstrate their focuses about the war.Firstly in Rupert Brooke sonnet he says, but kicking the bucket has made us rarer endowments then goldHere he has utilized a solid likeness in light of the fact that the officers are not truly gold. This statement additionally demonstrates that they are fortunate to be in the war, which allows them to pass on for their nation. Anyway Owen asserts the inverse, he states,Bent twofold like old beggarsA likeness which means war is terrible and that slaughtering different warriors is a waste and they look like old poor people. Brooke says in this poem,Nobleness strolls in our ways once more; and we have come into our heritageThis illustration is disclosing to us that being honorable gives you significance and poise and that this strolls in their manners agai n and they can likewise now feel the legacy inside them. This affirms kicking the bucket for your nation is a correct thing to do.However Owen says,in everything I could ever hope for before my defenseless sightHere Owen is utilizing an analogy, he is giving us that he cannot turn away in his fantasies and he cannot abandon them as well, he sees it all in his fantasies and Owen totally thinks biting the dust for your nation is no good.Brooke saysTheir children, they gave everlasting status as should be obvious Brooke is utilizing an illustration here, they dont truly live perpetually, in actuality they are recalled for eternity. They gave their everlasting status and Brooke is stating surrendering your life is definitely not a major dealIn examination Owen saysobscene as disease, harsh as the cud of vileHere Owen says war resembles malignant growth it spreads and executes slowly.Brooke champions the possibility of the war cause for greatness in his endeavor to lure.blow out, you cor nets over the rich dead! This articulation seems like a triumphant call to job like that of the pied flute player of Hamlin driving small kids away. The way that the word Dead is in capitals is critical on the grounds that it propose that if troopers should pass on in the fight they will take on a practically blessed quality.Owen then again composes his sonnet in the light of fight understanding and is quick to demoralize youngsters or as he considers them, kids from going into fight. Owen writes in his poem,knocked-kneed hacking like hagsThis incredible likeness underlines the way that the war has matured the men rashly and denied them of their childhood. Owen says passing on for your nation is hopeless and no point of ricking your life only for war.Again Brooke utilizes a solid similitude by saying,Sweet wine of youth; allowed up the years to beMeaning their blood is valuable, similar to sweet wine on the grounds that the officers have been covered for a considerable length of time and their blood is rich simply like rich wine when it has been left for quite a long time. They are more than people. Blood of Christ is wine, similar to the dead fighters blood. They have passed on youthful and have lost their young and cheerful years. In this statement he guarantees biting the dust youthful is goodbecause your blood will be rich and valuable. Brooke composes more by saying,of work and happiness, and that unhoped quiet here he is stating that they worked, had a giggle and unfortunately there was neither harmony nor quiet. Brooke additionally guarantees unhoped tranquil he utilizes exemplification meaning when you give human characteristics yet not human essentially only a picture eg. The entryway yawned, an entryway cannot yawn it is only a human quality. In differentiation of these two statements Owen says, his hanging face, similar to a fallen angel tired of sinBoth an illustration and a metaphor are being envisioned into your head with. Hes not so much a demon ye t he resembles a fallen angel that has been hung up and being rebuffed on account of all the terrible things that he had done throughout everyday life. Owen is effectively alarming the peruser about war with this quote. The dead that was composed by Rupert Brooke as the First World War started ,has precisely demonstrated to the peruser that they should pass on for their nation, since he says that your blood will be valuable and despite the fact that you probably won't live perpetually you will be recollected for eternity. Brooke utilizes numerous focuses to pull in individuals to kick the bucket for their nation. In any case, the other artist Wilfred Owen who composed the sonnet named Dulce ET Decorum Est who himself battled in the war composed his sonnet around the finish of the war, in his sonnet he discloses to us whole realities about how the war is and that theres no point of kicking the bucket for your nation. One out of the considerable number of statements in Owens sonnet tha t I accept will get the peruser consideration is the statement, wherein he asserts, his hanging face, similar to a villain tired of wrongdoing the explanation I accept this, is on the grounds that this statement makes individuals scared about war as he is relating someones face to a fallen angel tired of transgression, likewise as I would like to think I think this statement is incredible and makes Owens sonnet a fortuitous event.

Compare and Contrast of Florida and Hawaii
Throughout the mid year and winter, numerous families like to go on get-aways to tropical areas so as to take in the wonderful and stunning sights that they probably won't have the option to involvement with home. Two well known spots to visit are Florida and Hawaii. While many accept that one sea shore network is in the same class as some other, there are numerous contrasts among Hawaii and Florida that make them appropriate for various individuals, contingent upon what sort of excursion they need to understanding. Specifically there are contrasts in the way of life, climate, and attractions of these two sea shore networks. Albeit both Florida and Hawaii are tropical areas, their societies are a long way from comparative. Florida has a very ââ¬Å"typicalâ⬠American feel to it. It is wealthy in occupied roads, shouting kids, discourteous and threatening individuals, and fat-filled eateries with a cheeseburger consistently on the menu some place. Other than everybody being in a swimsuit wherever on a blistering, summer day, the individuals in Florida are actually the same than you and I. It might appear as though everybody visits Florida for a get-away to escape from their regular day to day existences, yet they truly are heading off to similar issues in an alternate area. In Hawaii, in any case, you become a piece of a fresh out of the box new experience that you have likely never experienced. Sea shores there are not fixed from start to finish with eateries and rental shops; rather, they are fixed with palm trees and the entirety of their immaculate, common ponders that have been there since the islands shaped. In Hawaii, you escape from the ââ¬Å"realâ⬠world and get an opportunity to encounter the rich island culture that you may never have thought about. The rushing about of the downtown life and the dull everyday place of employment of the rural life are not found in Hawaii. It is loose, and consistently appears as though it is another experience sitting tight for you to find it. The food in Hawaii is additionally a takeoff from something that you could get some other day. There are various island nourishments that you could never discover anyplace else, similar to poi, a bread that is made out of purple potatoes, or Hawaiian shave ice, where they join beans with an assortment of kinds of frozen yogurt. Likewise, pineapple is an extremely mainstream expansion to pretty much anything you could envision, and the food is typically made to be ââ¬Å"volcanoâ⬠hot. To the extent a break goes, Hawaii is the ideal spot to go to encounter a stunning new culture. Regardless of whether you can't differentiate between the way of life of Hawaii and Florida, the climate effectively separates the two. To the extent tropical areas go, numerous individuals anticipate that the climate should be warm and bright, searching for an ideal day to go to the sea shore and unwind close to the sea. In Florida, however the warmth and dampness is practically insufferable. It makes you need to quickly hop into the sea to attempt a chill under the sweltering sun. Tragically, with the sun pounding on the sea and the stickiness noticeable all around catching the entirety of the warmth, the sea likewise warms up rapidly and it turns out to be progressively similar to a blistering tub, which isn't the most unwinding of decision in a warm, summer day. With the entirety of the moistness in Florida, it is additionally regular for an abrupt deluge to emit and leave you splashing wet like you have been in the sea throughout the day. Regardless of these defects in the ideal, tropical climate you expect, when you do get a pleasant day in Florida, it makes you wish the day could never end and that you could never need to leave. Hawaiiââ¬â¢s climate causes the greatest days in Florida to appear to be a hot, muggy day in Missouri in August. It scarcely rains in Hawaii, continually leaving you with a pleasant day to go to the sea shore or go on a nature climb. Despite the fact that it might reach up to 90 degrees, there is almost no mugginess, so even the most smoking of days feels like an agreeable, cool, windy evening. Additionally, when you need to hop into the sea and chill, it is overall quite reviving. Hawaii really shows the run of the mill climate you would expect out of a tropical island and prompts a loosening up escape for any individual who wishes to appreciate it. Probably the greatest contrast among Florida and Hawaii are the attractions they bring to the table and what you can do with your time in either place. As you may expect, the significant fascination of both Florida and Hawaii are the various sea shores that populate the two states. Past the sea shores, nonetheless, both Florida and Hawaii offer one of a kind attractions that will entertain individuals everything being equal. In Florida, one of the significant attractions is Disney World, a retreat intended to let your internal identity free and experience the universe of kid's shows that you looked as a child. While numerous individuals consider Disney To be as an entertainment mecca for kids, the recreation center can be delighted in by individuals all things considered. There are numerous other entertainment meccas in Florida that are ââ¬Å"hot spotsâ⬠for get-aways, for example, Sea World, Universal Studios, and Busch Gardens. Another large travel spot in Florida is the Florida Everglades and Everglades National Park. The Everglades is an enormous wetland environment in the southern part of Florida that offers numerous individuals an opportunity to investigate a spot they couldnââ¬â¢t find anyplace else on the planet. While Florida may have event congregations and some characteristic shows to visit, however, it can't contrast and the magnificence of Hawaii. Hawaii might not have entertainment meccas, however it compensates for it with the entirety of its astounding, normal attractions. The sea shores are delightful, with perfectly clear water that permits you to watch a ton of undersea existence while never getting into a scuba suit. A portion of the nature strolls that you can go on in Hawaii are basically stunning a direct result of all the wonderful landscape that you go en route. You can ride ponies on the sea shore, take a submarine ride through the sea, and, on the off chance that you are sufficiently daring, even go to the highest point of a fountain of liquid magma and experience the entirety of the wonderful scene that really develops around it. Besides, significant fascination in Hawaii is the Pearl Harbor maritime base and dedication. Individuals from everywhere throughout the world, even from Japan go to the commemoration to perceive what is deserted from an incredible American disaster. You can even now observe the oil left in the sea in certain spots, and you can stroll over a glass connect that permits you to look down and see a submerged war vessel. Regardless of what you decide to do, you are ensured to discover something in Hawaii that you were unable to discover anyplace else on the planet. Regardless of whether the food you eat or the climate you experience, there is a great deal that isolates Florida and Hawaii. The two spots offer a one of a kind encounter that you ordinarily would not have in your regular daily existence. Be that as it may, you can visit Florida and go to an entertainment mecca with your loved ones; I would suggest seeing Hawaii and experience a culture you may have never observed.

Alive essays
Alive articles Alive, by Piers Paul Read, is the tale of how a Uruguayan rugby crew and their companions who made due for ten weeks in the Andes after their sanctioned plane to Chile slammed. The plane took off on October 12, 1972, from Montevideo for Santiago. Reports of awful climate in the Andes brought the plane down in Mendoza, a little Argentinean town near the Andes. The young men were disillusioned; be that as it may, the following day the climate cleared so the plane took off for the Planchon Pass toward the south. The flight was normal and the air loose until the pilot moved in the direction of the north to Santiago, Chile. Before long, the plane hit an air pocket and plunged a few hundred feet. There was anxious kidding in the lodge until the plane hit a subsequent air pocket that brought it out of the mists. The genuine frenzy hit when the view out the windows was not the lavish green valleys of Chile but rather of a rough mountain ten feet from the wing. The wing hit the mountain, seve red, and flipped over the body of the plane, removing the tail. The plane at that point dove to the ground. In any case, rather than crushing into the stones, it arrived on its gut and slid down the valley like a toboggan. Albeit thirty-two out of the first forty-five travelers endure the accident, just twenty-seven endure the night. Before long the survivors became frail since they just got one square of chocolate and a capful of wine a day. At last, on the tenth day, the strict discussion about whether or not to eat the dead bodies was at long last talked about. In spite of the fact that everybody concluded that it was the privilege and just activity, a few couldn't move beyond the physical repugnance. When it became evident that there would be no salvage, the rare sorts of people who had recently declined now took their first pieces. After they had recaptured their quality, three young men set out to discover the tail for additional provisions. The trip was exhausting, and they h adnt arranged their rigging adequately. Is Lena Dunhams First Book Worth $3.5 Million
Is Lena Dunhams First Book Worth $3.5 Million No. Its not. But thats the price reported in the NY Daily News. Dunhams book has the working title Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What Shes Learned, and it is reported to include a humorous essays about her life as a 20-something woman. There are already comparisons between her book and Tina Feys Bossypants, which was a runaway success and earned her every penny of a reported $5 million advance and Im sure the royalty checks keep coming. Random House is betting that Dunhams book will sell in equally impressive numbers. But it wont. I had never heard of Lena Dunham until last Friday. Im not that familiar with Girls (though Id heard of it), and Ive never seen Tiny Furniture. Im also over 30 (not very far over), so maybe thats to be expected. Im not sure. I have been familiar with Tina Feys work for quite a while now. When her book came out, I saw her name, and I stopped to take a look. Lots of people did. Dunham does not have the name recognition that will draw in readers (this point is explored more fully over at Forbes). Even if all of her 360,000+ Twitter followers buy a copy, she still wont hit the break-even mark. There is also the issue of her audience to consider. It is assumed (and seems likely from where I sit) that this audience is made up of other 20-something women who will be able to identify with Dunhams experiences. Thats great when it comes to TV shows, but it is less great when it comes to books. This demographic is not exactly known for its book-buying power. The people who are more known for buying books are not going to be as interested. If she were a hot young novelist, maybe. But Dunhams making her first book a book of essays. That just doesnt have the same commercial appeal no matter how funny it might end up being. Jenny Lawson (aka The Bloggess) exceeded expectations with her comedic memoir Lets Pretend This Never Happened earlier this year. Readers were already familiar with her writing, though, from her wildly popular blog, and they had gotten to know her fairly well before the book ever hit the stands. Had Dunham gone a similar route, I would have more faith in her. Twitter and a show on HBO are not, I think, enough. Im not saying that Dunham doesnt have a great book in her or that people wont buy it. I just dont think that enough people will buy it to make the $3.5+ million price tag worth it for Random House. It also means that a lot of other authors, even established and respected ones, will not get put in print this next year. The money is gone, and I dont think that it went to the right place. What do you think? Does Dunham have the name recognition and the skill to wow readers and sell books? Or did Random House bet on the wrong book? Culture Clash - Literature Essay Samples
Generalizations and associations seem to permeate the culture of every human society. If this were not the case, there would be no need for the sociological study of ethnocentricity. The Odyssey of Homer strongly exhibits this quality of judging cultures and other peoples based on criteria defined by its own ancient Greek civilization. In this way, one can draw a parallel between Ancient China and Ancient Greece. The Chinese once viewed their country as the center of the universe; their values, beliefs, and customs were the standards against which they measured everything and everyone else. From The Odyssey, one can detect a similar methodology in the way in which the Greeks assessed the level of sophistication of other cultures by using their own familiar conventions as universal standards for defining humanity. Through The Odyssey, one can isolate three main methods the Greeks used in their cultural classifications: hospitality, story-telling, and diet. However, in order to appreciate fully the importance of such standards of comparison, one should examine the context in which each criterion was used. Since Homer does not directly list each criterion one by one, one might have to give a cursory examination of the attributes of each civilization that Odysseus encounters, as well as the different impressions the Greeks had when encountering each one, so as to formulate a basic understanding of how hospitality, story-telling, and diet relate to one another and to the general concept of humanity.Hospitality is one of the largest recurring themes in The Odyssey. By examining how Nestor greets Telemachos to his household, one can see a good model of how a host should treat his guests. Before Nestor even identifies Telemachos as Odysseusà ¹s son, he and his family kindly escort Telemachos and his companions into their house, inviting them to dine with the rest (The Odyssey, Book III, 34-44). Nestor actually asks the strangers to identify themselves only after Telemachos and his companions have finished their meals (III, 69-74). Though we in our modern day might find this custom of eat first, ask later to be quite odd, the ancient Greeks commonly used this concept of hospitality as a method of assessing the level of grace and refinement of a particular people. Story-telling is also another integral part of ancient Greek culture to which the characters in The Odyssey attached high value and excellence. For instance, because of Odysseusà ¹s amazing tales of his travels, the Phaiakian listeners were all stricken in silence, held in thrall by the story all through the shadowy chambers (XI, 333-334). Consequently, the Phaiakians proceeded to inundate Odysseus with more gifts, so as to compensate him for his sufferings as well as show their appreciation for his well-told stories (XI, 336-341). Overall I felt that the ancient Greek concept of hospitality and the high value attached to story-telling were quite interesting, though a bit foreign to my own understanding of culture. However, I was able to relate to most of their values concerning diet and culinary refinement, including the assumptions on the nature and quality of a culture associated with those ethics. For instance, one can refer to how Odysseus described the Cyclops, Polyphemos: his mind was lawless, / and in truth he was a monstrous wonder made to behold, not / like a man, an eater of bread, but more like a wooded / peak of a the high mountains seen standing away from the others (IX, 189-192). Despite the fact that the Cyclops was described as monstrous, lawless, and primitive, one should note the direct comparison to humans Odysseus made in order to help his listeners better understand the morally depraved nature of Polyphemos. In short, the Cyclops did not eat bread, like ÃÅ'normalà ¹ humans. First, the phrase eater of bread acts as a metaphor for non-anthropophagia. Since both the Cyclops and Odysseus spoke the same language and could co mmunicate on a coherent level, the thought of one sentient being knowingly devouring another sentient being seemed barbaric and repulsive, almost cannibalistic. Hence, I cringed as I read how Polyphemos killed two companions of Odysseus by smashing them into the ground, like puppies, and then ate them raw (IX, 287-295). I suppose that since I share this same aversion toward cannibalism as the Ancient Greeks, I have bridged a section of this cultural gap that prevents me from fully understanding their concept of humanity and refined civilization. If one tries to adopt this same degree of fervor with respect to Greek hospitality and story-telling, as one might in oneà ¹s rejection of cannibalism, we might better relate to the way the Greeks in The Odyssey evaluated different cultures, classifying some as barbaric and others as more superior. For example, the first concepts that come to my mind when I think of the word ÃÅ'cannibalà ¹ are primitive, cruel, uncivilized, violent, a nd uncultured. Hence, by associating the word ÃÅ'cannibalà ¹ with the Cyclops, the vices of such adjectives carry over in my mind, and a negative impression of the individual surfaces. One can then hypothesize that this formulation of an image of a particularly barbaric race was exactly the effect that Odysseus wanted to convey to his listeners at the time. However, although someone could argue that nothing prevents Odysseus from manipulating the concepts of hospitality, story-telling, and diet so as to invoke an extreme negative impression of a particular foreign culture, one might suggest that the ancient Greeks merely had concrete examples to describe barbaric cultures, where inhospitableness and cannibalism were simply associations given to such unrefined civilizations. For instance, one could compare Polyphemos with the Laistrygonians. Like the Cyclops, the Laistrygonians were much larger and stronger than humans (X, 112-113). This race of giants likewise demonstrated m urderous cruelty when they threw giant boulders at the ships of Odysseus, so that all but his own were destroyed (X, 121-132). However, the greatest similarity between the Cyclopes and the Laistrygonians is the fact that they both eat human flesh. Two of Odysseusà ¹s men were immediately captured and prepared for dinner in the house of one of these giants (X, 116), while others were being speared like fish and taken away to be eaten (X, 124-125). Hence, an ancient Greek could then create assumptions about different cultures by generalizing on the concepts of diet, hospitality, etc. and associating them with the seemingly barbaric nature of those civilizations described. For instance the fact that both the Cyclopes and the Laistrygonians are eaters of flesh can imply that they are also cruel, inhospitable, and dangerous. Likewise, if Odysseus encounters a third race that seems pitiless, inhospitable, and primitively aggressive, it would not be unreasonable for one to surmise th at such a race might also be devourers of human fleshÃâ¹not eaters of bread like man.As a final point, one can also draw a correlation between the values of ancient Greek culture and their theological beliefs. For instance, when Odysseus first spoke to the Polyphemos the Cyclops, he requested a guest present or some gift of grace, for such is the right of strangers (IX, 267-268). When I initially read those lines, I felt that Odysseusà ¹s words were a bit forward and daring, almost rude. However, by reading further, I attained a possible reason for why Odysseus reasoned the way he did, for he said: Therefore respect the gods [ÃÅ .] We are your suppliants, and Zeus the guest god [ÃÅ ] avenges any wrong toward strangers and suppliants (IX, 268-271). Therefore, one might argue that it is this fear of incurring a godà ¹s wrath that causes these Greeks to follow customs they have gradually believed to be godlike or god-defined. But note how Polyphenos responds to Odysseusà ¹ s comment on the gods when he said: The Cyclopes do not concern themselves over Zeus of the aegis, nor any of the rest of the blessed gods, since we are far better than they (IX, 275-277). It then follows that since the Cyclopes do not fear the gods, they act impulsively and are motivated only by their selfish desires. The epitome of the Cyclopsà ¹s haughty fearlessness is demonstrated by the way he continually slaughters Odysseusà ¹s companions for food. Polyphemos completely ignores this code of hospitality that is such an integral part of Greek culture and their theology and totally ignores any consequences of his actions. Hence, one could add that the Cyclopes are not only an inhospitable, uncultured, man-eating barbaric race, but they also are sacrilegious, haughty, and short-sighted. Indeed, one likely could not draw all of these conclusions solely by observing the diet of the Cyclopes. Rather, by appraising the behavior and customs of another civilization against ethi cs and values that are so seemingly universal in their eyes, the ancient Greeks were able to draw generalizations on the sophistication of another raceà ¹s culture. As we could see with the both the Cyclopes and the Laistrygonians, such generalizations were upheld and proven to be accurate.Overall, by carefully noting all incidences in The Odyssey where a convention, custom, or moral is being challenged or applied, one could get a glimpse of what sort of ethics and values the ancient Greeks in epic poetry held. Furthermore, one would then have the basis of arguing for what the values and customs of the actual ancient Greek civilization at that time might have been. Objectively, though, one might argue against the absurdity of judging an entire culture or race of people based on their diet. However, even in our world today, we see people passing judgement and generalizations left and right, especially through the media. Perhaps, if the Cyclopes or the Laistrygonians had their o wn Homeric poet, we would then see a different side of the story than the one related to us through the winged words of Odysseus.

Nutrition is Right for Everyone Essays - 1391 Words
Food is a necessary part of life. Animals, plants and other organisms take in food substances and process the nutrients within their bodies. Without food humans lose energy, concentration, and control of their bodies. While plants donââ¬â¢t have many options when it comes to food, humans have so many options that it is sometimes hard to make good healthy decisions when it comes to nutrition. In order to receive proper nutrition, it is important for children to receive three healthy and balanced meals a day. An article in Mothering magazine states that, ââ¬Å"Many adults assume that kids prefer junk food to healthy foodâ⬠(Andre, 31). However, researchers disagree. A recent study performed at Harvard School of Public Health reveals that children who were served a standard school lunch left more food on their plates than children who were fed nutritious lunches (Andre, 31). Arthur Miller and the American Dream Free Essays
As Voltaire once said, ââ¬Å"Each player must accept the cards life deals him or her: but once they are in hand, he or she alone must decide how to play the cards in order to win the game. â⬠Similarly, my grandfather compares people to decks of cards. He believes that for each person, different cards are missing from the deck, accordingly giving each person different abilities. We will write a custom essay sample on Arthur Miller and the American Dream or any similar topic only for you Order Now In this example, fate is literally in the cards. Though an unsuccessful salesman, Willy Lomanââ¬â¢s infallible belief in his dream shows that he never considered the salesman card was ââ¬Å"missingâ⬠from his deck. The notion of the American dream falls back on the blind optimism and faith of Americans. In Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller, Willy Loman futilely chases the American dream, which is an unattainable, impossible fantasy to Miller, used to show the blind faith in Americans, and depicted as a character flaw rather than attribute in the protagonists of the play. To begin, the tone of the novel set by Arthur Miller is a critical and cynical attitude towards the idea of the American dream. A widely accepted definition of the American dream is the perception that through hard work, one can achieve a life of personal and material happiness. Moreover, the representation of the American dream in the play is at odds with the general belief that hard work generates success. Willy tells his sons, ââ¬Å"Be liked and you will never wantâ⬠(33). If this were actually the case, his hard work combined with being well-liked would have been the recipe for personal and materialistic happiness. Though Willy Loman is constantly working, his obsession with the superficial qualities of being liked contrasts with the more tenacious and rewarding understanding of the American dream. Miller shows us just how unbelieving he is in the American dream when he wrote the plot of Death of a Salesman, in which the protagonists chase unattainable desires. Through Millerââ¬â¢s critical take on the American dream, he is trying to portray that Americans are blindly faithful and optimistic; Miller openly criticized such a principle. Happy says on page 23, ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re a poet, you know that Biff? Youââ¬â¢re aââ¬âyouââ¬â¢re an idealist! â⬠Making Biff an idealistic, underachieving son of a daydreaming failure adds to the irony of the American dream in the play. Another example of the authorââ¬â¢s perspective was the way in which Miller suggests that the idea of the American dream hinders people from enjoying the success they have already achieved, in Willyââ¬â¢s case, having a loving family. The Lomans were optimistic during situations where it was unwarranted; their expectant approach to failure and disappointment is more proof of Arthur Millerââ¬â¢s disapproval of the American Dream. Because Arthur Miller believed the American Dream was chased in vain, he portrayed it as a character flaw rather than an attribute in the protagonists in the play. Willy Loman, the protagonist (as well as his own antagonist), brought himself to his own demise when he could not discern his own life from his Dream. Millerââ¬â¢s antagonistic approach towards the various get-rich-quick dreams Biff, Happy, and Willy entertained also shined through at the impossibility of their execution. His hostility towards facets of the American mentality comes through in the self-destruction of Willy because of his all-consuming dream. For the same reason, Biffââ¬â¢s longing for the symbolically free West showed that Willy instilled his blind faith and materialistic desires in his sonââ¬â¢s dream as well. Biff asked Happy with enthusiasm, ââ¬Å"Listen why donââ¬â¢t you come out West with me? â⬠(23). Although intending to come to terms with his own life, Biffââ¬â¢s longing for the West is glorified by his fatherââ¬â¢s undying faith in his own Dream. Biff and Willy Lomanââ¬â¢s dependency on their fantasies show another, more negative, aspect to having dreams. Death of a Salesman is one of the foundational texts describing the American dream. Arthur Miller wrote the play in the mindset of an adversary to the American dream. Death of a Salesman displays Millerââ¬â¢s disapproval for the American dream and blind optimism, and displays chasing a dream as a weakness rather than a strength. In the play, Arthur Miller shows us that although it is important to teach of success, it is equally important to prepare for failure. In a game of cards, you can have all the strategy in the world, but fate is in the draw. How to cite Arthur Miller and the American Dream, Papers

Supply Chain and Overall Strategy Of Wal
To begin with, Wal-Martââ¬â¢s overall business strategy is composed of goals, core activities, and product-market focus (Heizer Render, 2011). The goals of the company are to dominate markets, utilize low cost systems, promote high growth, and to do it the Wal-Mart way (Krajewski et al., 2009).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Supply Chain and Overall Strategy Of Wal-Mart specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The core activities of the organization are to integrate logistics, manage them intensely, and to tailor them according to the local situation. The product-market focuses entails provision of branded general merchandise, value oriented customers, develop easier markets first, and to work from regional hubs. All these contribute to the value proposition of the organization (Stevenson, 2008). The supply chain strategy of the organization entails purchasing the goods and materials that the company uses for the lo west prices available in the market to them to retail at customer friendly prices. The organization is known to bypass intermediaries and middle men and to negotiate intensively during purchase of goods, services and materials (Heizer Render, 2011). The organization is also known to prefer local manufactures as well as preferring the manufacturers that demonstrated transparent cost structures. The organization then establishes long term relationships with these types of manufacturers. The organizationââ¬â¢s logistics are among the most efficient in large businesses today (Stevenson, 2008). Distribution centers are served by a fleet of not less than 3000 trucks that are owned by the organization. These are for the purpose of transporting goods to the Wal-Mart outlets twice every week due to the high flow of goods from the organizationââ¬â¢s individual stores. These are supervised by a coordinator. The organization employs cross-docking for the purpose of managing the acquisiti on of goods from their suppliers. In addition, decisions concerning merchandising, pricing, and promotions have been decentralized and left to the market forces; this is managed by stores, distribution centers, and suppliers (Krajewski et al., 2009). The organization has instilled information technology and communication systems to aid their inventory management and set up its own satellite communication system in the 1980ââ¬â¢s. The satellite connected the organizationââ¬â¢s numerous stores as well as the organizationââ¬â¢s suppliers to the organization.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? The organizationââ¬â¢s supply chain enables the organization to meet its goals that have been outlined earlier in this essay (Krajewski et al., 2009). Due to establishment of an ICT system specifically for the organization, the organization has successfully managed to reinforce their relationships with their customers, employees, individual stores, and their suppliers. This has enabled the organization to have value-oriented customers, to have an integrated logistics system, ensure that their stores always have sufficient stock, and thus promote the business as reliable to its customers, employees and suppliers alike. The organizationââ¬â¢s ability to search and engage only the lowest cost supplier as well as having their own transportation has paid dividends as well (Stevenson, 2008). The low costs were passed on to the customers as well and this added value to the organizationââ¬â¢s every step and process. In addition, the o wnership of its own fleet of vehicles also lowered costs and enabled prompt availability of the goods to their customers. This has resulted in the domination of markets by the organization, high growth, friendly prices for their goods and availability of these goods at all times (Krajewski et al., 2009). In conclusion, this organizationââ¬â¢s supply chain and overall strategy has enabled the organization to realize shorter time in inventory turnover, prompt and correct prediction of inventory levels and enabled utilization of working capital among other benefits (Stevenson, 2008). The Wal-Mart model is touted as one of the best in supply chain management owing to the benefits it has accorded the organization and given it an edge over its competitors (Heizer Render, 2011). Hinduism Essays - Religion, Hinduism, Hindu Denominations, Hindu
Hinduism Essays - Religion, Hinduism, Hindu Denominations, Hindu Hinduism Hinduism It is not sure where the earliest practices of Hinduism came from. The best evidence suggests that it originated from the Indus valley civilization around 4000 B.C. to 2000 B.C. During this time period Hinduism was influenced by many different invasions. Around 1500 B.C. the Aryan Indo European tribes invaded Northern India. With this invasion they brought their religion of Vedism. The Vedic Arians influenced the practices and beliefs of the Indus valley people and gave Hinduism its distinct identity. It is also said that this theory may not be accurate. Some people say that the time the Arians invaded India does not agree with other historical dates. What was clear was that there was a combining of cultures lead to what is Hinduism today. Hinduism is not really considered a religion; it is a way of life. It consists of thousands of religions that have evolved in India over the years. The beliefs of the Hindu religion are, in short, that goals like salvation, transmigration, and rebirth are looked upon with reverence. Hindus believe that the realization of some goals is beyond us and should be made a part of our activities while we are still living. They believe that everything we do (Karma) is accounted for by the celestial presence (Chitragupta) and has implication on our next life or rebirth (Punarjanma). The Hindus do not have one leader that tells them a sermon, or oversees what they do. They believe that all jivas (a persons soul) will move through a system of castes or there place in society. There are four castes, followers or unskilled workers, producers such as farmers, administrators, and the Brahmins or seers. The Brahmins are considered the leaders of Hinduism. Each Hindu is expected to perform several rituals everyday as part of there worship. These rituals include things like: making offerings to the gods, to all beings, to departed souls, and especially before eating, and to show hospitality to others and a continuous remembrance of God through the study of Holy Scripture. Hindus meditate, visit holy temples, and do charitable work on a daily basis.

Slope Formula to Find Rise over Run
Slope Formula to Find Rise over Run The slope formula is sometimes called rise over run. The simple way to think of the formula is: Mrise/run. M stands for slope. Your goal is to find the change in the height of the line over the horizontal distance of the line. First, look at a graph of a line and find two points, 1 and 2. You can use any two points on a line. The slope will be the same between any two points on a straight line.Note the X and Y value for each of the points. Now well designate the X and Y value for points 1 and 2. Well use subscripts to identify them in the slope formula. The formula for the slope of the straight line going through the points (X1, Y1) and (X2, Y2) is given by M (Y2 - Y1) / (X2 - X1) The answer, M is the slope of the line. It can be a positive or negative value. The subscripts are only used to identify the two points. They are not values or exponents. If you find this confusing, you could give the points names instead. How about Bert and Ernie? Point 1 is now Bert and Point 2 is now ErnieLook at the graph and note their X and Y values:(XBert, YBert) and (XErnie, YErnie)The slope formula is now: M (YErnie - YBert) / (XErnie - XBert) Slope Formula Tips and Tricks The slope formula can give a positive or a negative number as a result. In the case of vertical and horizontal lines, it can also give no answer or the number zero. If the slope is a positive value, the line is rising. The technical term is increasing. If the slope is a negative value, the line is descending. The technical term is decreasing. You can check your math by eyeballing the graph. If you got a negative slope but the line is clearly rising, you made an error. If the line is clearly going down and you got a positive slope, you made an error. It could be you mixed up X and Y and points 1 and 2.Vertical lines have no slope. In the equation, you are dividing by zero, which does not produce a number. If a quiz asks the slope of a vertical line, dont say zero. Say it has no slope.Horizontal lines have a zero slope. Zero is a number. In the equation, you are dividing zero by a number and the result is zero. If a quiz asks the slope of a horizontal line, say zero.Parallel lines have equal slopes. If you find the slope of one line, you dont have to run the formula for the other line. They will be the same. This can save you some time and effort.Pe rpendicular lines have negative reciprocal slopes. If two lines cross at a right angle, you can find the slope of one and then change the value for the other to negative or positive.

Geo Thermal Energy - Extra Credit Assignment Essay
Geo Thermal Energy - Extra Credit Assignment - Essay Example First of all more and more people are moving into the cities all around the world. This urban movement is bringing more and more people to the mechanized life. Moreover governments all around the world are introducing new technologies to less developed areas of their countries. These factors would increase the demand of energy many times over. The people living in village have a very low demand when it comes to energy. The mostly do all their work by hand or animal. Their basic energy demands are fulfilled by burning firewood etc. By bring these people into cities or by taking technology to them the demand of energy would be increased as their life styles would be totally changes. Moreover the entire human race is becoming more technology dependent day by day. There was once a time when cars were considered to a luxury. Today however keeping a car has become a necessity. This shows how the number cars over the years have dramatically increased. Moreover the technology is becoming cheaper day by day. Therefore more and more people can afford to buy and use it, thus increasing the demand for energy. The sources of energy on the other hand are totally limited. The main energy source currently being used by the world is fossil fuel. These fuels are expected to run out in a few decades. Therefore the discovery of alternative sources of energy is not a luxury but a necessity. Moreover non renewable resources create a lot of population which is very dangerous for the atmosphere. A solution to world energy problems is geothermal energy. Geothermal as the word implies means the energy of the earth. There are many different sources of geothermal energy. The most common and powerful sources is using the energy stored up under the earthââ¬â¢s surface. The energy form radioactive decay of minerals and sunââ¬â¢s energy absorbed on the earthââ¬â¢s surface is also used as geothermal energy. Currently 10715 megawatts of geothermal power is being generated in almost

Andy Warhol's Life Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Andy Warhol's Life - Essay Example The essay "Andy Warhol's Life" focuses on the life of the important figure in the pop art, Andy Warhol. He was growing up during the Great Depression in the metropolitan environs of a smoky industrialized city and at a very early age he showed a magnificent talent for sketching the cityââ¬â¢s sceneries. Due to an infection when he was 6 he was confined to bed; Andyââ¬â¢s mother and brothers would keep him company for hours while he drew, traced and printed. After this, he grew up loving art, which is said to be the only hobby he had in his childhood. When he turned about nine years old, his father bought him his first camera. Andy took pleasure in taking pictures, so much so that he even developed them on his own in his basement. His father died in 1942, the very same year that he got into Schenley High School. Andy would go on to become the first in his family to go past high school. He nearly failed during first year, but a compassionate professor gave him with one more chanc e by making him to sign up for a summer class. During this summer, he helped his eldest brother, Paul, sell fruit and vegetables from a van. Andy used every opportunity that arose to do quick on-the-spot portraits of the consumers. The drawings not only helped get him readmitted but also they made him get a small scholarship until when he graduated at the tender age of sixteen in 1945, he had become position 5. His father was a bright man who had recognized his sonââ¬â¢s talent and had saved enough money for his college education. Andy went to Carnegie Institute of Technology from 1945 to 1949 where he attained a degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in Pictorial Design. He had a goal of becoming a business illustrator. When he wasnââ¬â¢t in class, he was working in the exhibition section at Horneââ¬â¢s department store creating window displays. It was while he worked there that he was initiated into the world of fashion, which would be the primary influence of his inter est in becoming an commercial illustrator. Carnegie institute fostered his enthusiastic sense of drawing, designing and honed his ability to create visually. Almost immediately after graduating, Andy moved to the city of New York to start his profession as a commercial artist. His work made it to Glamour magazine in September of 1949 and after this Andy became one of the most flourishing illustrators of the next decade. These fetes enabled him become rich and win many awards. He had an exceptional, capricious style of sketching that contradicted its everyday sources: traced pictures and imagery. At times Andy engaged the delightfully unusual calligraphy of his mother, who was always recognized in his credits as -Andy Warholââ¬â¢s Mother-. She had left Pittsburgh sometime in 1952 to live with her son she stayed there for almost twenty years before dying in Pittsburgh in 1972. Andy pleased himself for his work by going on an around-the-world holiday with his buddy Charles from June to August of 1956. They visited Hawaii many countries in Asia, Africa and Europe. Serendipity 3, a stylish eatery and ice cream shop in Manhattan is East Side, was one place where Andy sometimes displayed his work. He frequently held social gatherings there where his friends could spoil themselves and their wives on the restaurantââ¬â¢s signature beverage called ââ¬Å"frozen hot chocolateâ⬠and all this time helping Andy hand-paint his self-published artistsââ¬â¢ books. In April 1961 Andy had his first chance to show his latest art. He

Analysis Of The Lord Of The Flies
Analysis Of The Lord Of The Flies Throughout the novel Lord of the Flies, various views and motifs are portrayed. Of these views and motifs, the main message which is illustrated is one that questions society. It is clear from the very beginning that is a message conveyed in this novel. On the whole, Golding is portraying a good versus evil which are represented by Jack and Ralph. In Lord of the Flies a variety of ideas can be extracted on what the message Golding is trying to show. Golding wrote this novel in order to show the basic contrast of good and evil in society and how things can get out of hand if your primal urges are left uncontrolled. Throughout this novel, a great deal of contrasts are portrayed, one major one being good versus evil. To fully understand why Golding chose to write this book based on a good and bad motif, we have to look at the time period it was written in. During the time period this book was written in, the cold war was a major concern in everyday life. Golding, just as many other writers chose to write about the wrongs of communism in a subtle way, using children as a vehicle. In Lord of the Flies Golding uses Ralph, the leader of the tribe, to portray good and society (and probably democracy with the conch, everyone had an opinion), Jack on the other hand represents evil and what can happen if let uncontrolled (and perhaps in a way communism). All through the novel, Jack and Ralph quarrel to see who gets control of the tribe. Eventually of course, evil wins. In Lord of the Flies, there are many characters, but the most noticeable ones are of course Ralph and Jack, along with a handful of others I will describe the role they play in the book and how they all show either good or evil. Ralph Ralph is definitely the novels main character. He is elected as leader of the group mainly because he is in possession of the conch shell. He shows the good that there can be on the world. He is committed to keeping to society and following the example which was set by the elders. Jack Jack is the character that co-exists with the main character. He is not elected as the leader of the tribe. This leaves him in a jealous rage which continues throughout the book. He illustrates the evil that exists in society and how people can get dragged into it, sometimes against their own will. Jack continually makes life difficult for Ralph and does not follow the right example. Piggy Piggy is the wise intellectual boy in the novel. He is introduced very early on along with Ralph. Piggy represents societys brains and his cries for order go unheard, just like they do in real life. He is good in the way he does nothing wrong, but too weak of word to do anything just. Simon Simon is perhaps the only really good person in the novel. By the way Golding describes his character, there seem to be no flaws in it. He represents the natural goodness in people, but he is to weak to do anything about the evil. There are a significant amount of props, or scenery used in the Book Lord of the Flies, many of them with a meaning. At the very start of the book we are introduced to a very important one which also has a sociological meaning to it. The Conch shell is used to summon the boys at the beginning and impresses many of them making them think of him as a natural leader. Seeing there is nothing left of the plane wreckage the conch shell is one of the only things they have which is linked to society and therefore becomes a powerful symbol of civilization. It is used throughout the book effectively by Ralph but when it is flattened it symbolizes the complete downfall of civilization and the loss of control. Another important symbol in the novel is the beast. It stands for the fear which all of the boys have and the savagery they all have. All of the boys, especially the littleuns are afraid of the beast but only Simon recognizes that the fear is within the boys themselves. Because the beast l ies within the boys, more savage they act, the more apparent the beast is. The loss of power is one very remarkable problem Ralph seems to have from the very start. As soon as Jack comes into the scene, there is a sense of rebellion. Jack protests in some of the very first chapters that he should be leader instead, but it led to nothing. Ralph seems to be on top of things on the whole, but as soon as Jack started trying Ralphs leadership, things went on a downhill slope. In Lord of the Flies, something called Id and Superego are subconsciously integrated, forming a contrasted point of view. Id and Superego are a ideas of Sigmund Freud, a professor of psychology. Id is the primal urges you have, while your Superego is where you respond to what you think society expects of you. In the novel, these two types of personalities are both applied, leaving a very contrasted set of characters. The Superego in Lord of the Flies is definitely Piggy. He is the one who is always questioning whatever he or someone else is doing is right. He compares all of his experiences to what his auntie says. Someone with a Superego usually is concerned with what society thinks of them, just like Piggy is afraid of other people judging him. The Id on the other hand is nearly the complete opposite of the Superego. In this book, Jack and his tribe exhibit the Id in every human being. His tribe follows what they like doing, or in other words their primal urges. This can mean hunti ng, feasting, killing etc. It is possible that Golding chose to show these two very different types of personalities on purpose, but without an answer, we are not quite sure. In the above I have explored just one of the dozens of arguments there are to make about Lord of the Flies. Good versus evil are both very clearly portrayed in this novel making it easy to distinguish which one is which. In the book, political views are subtly illustrated in the form of children, one Jack, one Ralph. In a mà à ¹lange with other characters, Golding created a modern day society on a small scale where good an evil exist simultaneously and in which the Id is let loose.
